Relationships between Fashion and Politics
“With the number of seasons, collections and fashion weeks increasing, political statements benefit brands by attracting media coverage. But they also position fashion as more art than industry, all the better to smooth friction between progressive values and capitalist profit motive.”
from “Why Being a Democrat is Always Fashionable: Dressing in US Election Times” by

“We have the 1930s to thank for a by-now-familiar paradox: Americans’ clothes became more similar even as their bodies diverged along class lines.”

this week in the margins
Hello! Every week I will be publishing this section called ‘this week in the margins.’ It is titled thus because I am an extremely fragmentary writer–I like to jot down pieces of poetry and arbitrary thought on trains and between classes and hate keeping them to myself–so every Wednesday I will be compiling them offloading them here.
Because of finals, this is coming on a Friday, but I haven’t really had time to think for myself at all. I have, however, listened to a lot of Frank Ocean this week, so I’ve sort of compiled some of my favorite lines into a lazy found poem. Until next week….
from frank
what can i do?
to know?
you better?
sixteen?
how was i supposed to know? anything
what can i do? what can i do
close enough, close enough to prove
how come ecstasy
always
depresses me so?
peace to the boy(s) that we used to be though
self-contained and aware
just a fond farewell to a friend
both our hands are filthy, pointing up at the moon
close enough, close enough to prove
mind over matter
is magic, i do magic
there’s light with no heat
can’t outrun
can’t outrun something you need
i had whatsapped him for atonement
recreation, I do magic
can’t wait some, something you, something out there
green emeralds, pink diamonds
cut your teeth on sheets in paris
apple jackal
at the mercy
of you
infatuation’s your rush
recreation is keeping us all self contained, and aware
of each other’s form
how was i supposed to know?
anything

Due to school stress, not much sporadic thought this week…
serving up trauma with a side of “reevaluating my place in the structure of premature death” and “the imposition of helplessness”
logos as a means of (responsibly?) returning to eros
testimony occurs in the failings of law–something hushed or unspeakable had to have happened for a testimony to be what it is/have a politically and socially grave/weighty identity
the subway exists in so many times and so many places, and the L has such a short memory–there’s still a chain, i dropped, bouncing around on the orange line somewhere, sometime.
wow – this is still the mood!
let’s make more moodboards more often
hard! at! work!
